World No Tobacco Day is a World Health Organisation initiative, highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce disabilities, diseases and deaths resulting from exposure, production and consumption of tobacco.
In this years event, the Kenya Tobacco Control Alliance chose to commemorate it in various counties.
In Vihiga county, the public event was well attended with various county dignitaries gracing the occasion. The chief guest Mr Caleb Temba Amaswache, the deputy governor reiterated the county’s commitment to enforce the law to safeguard the health of Vihiga county’s residents. The CEC health Hon. Zilpha Kageha also emphasized on the need of having a stronger county legislation to curb the rising tobacco menace in the region.
Being the capital city county, Nairobi’s event was well attended by WHO Country representative(s), The cabinet secretary in the Ministry of Health, Heads of Tobacco Control Unit and Department of Non-Communicable Diseases from the Ministry of Health, representatives from the Kenya Tobacco Control Board, and various representatives from the Civil Society led by Kenya Tobacco Control Alliance [KETCA]. The Nairobi function saw the recognition of the Tobacco Control Board efforts in Tobacco Control in the country. The chair of KETCA was also privileged to share his views on the World No Tobacco Day 2016 with CCTV Africa.
